SXSW encounters part 1

The other evening I was at a party sandwiched between Eugene Mirman (with whom I was having a conversation) and David Cross (who was with Eugene). A guy comes up to David and says "You were on a TV Show. What was it?" David says, "You tell me.". So Eugene starts naming fake shows like "Slammers!" and the guy says, "No, it wasn't that". Finally he figures it out, David takes a photo with him and that is that. Then a girl comes up to me and says, excuse me, I just need to get in here. We were standing by the bar, so I thought she wanted a drink. But she really wanted to talk to David. She walks up to him and says, "Hi Mr. David Cross, I'm a big fan. I really love your politics" or something like that. Then she starts talking about Chris Matthews. David says, "The guy from Hardball? That guy is a douchebag." And she says, "But he has some real leftist views." and David replies, "No he doesn't." She's starting to get the idea that David doesn't like Chris Matthews. She says, "It's just that he's from Philly and I'm from Philly..." and David Cross says, "Okay, so he's a douchebag from Philly...." At this point I deemed the conversation too awkward to listen in anymore...

This morning there is a British band talking loudly in the lobby. "We're number one most added at FMBQ!" then they turn to me and say, "what is FMBQ?". Then they are going on about all the different stations where they are number one. and they say to me, "Where is Laramie?" Okay, so I have to ask who they are. Turns out they are GOMEZ. Then there is a CNN story about the New Cars. Lead singer guy from Gomez says, "Wasn't Peter Cetera the lead singer for the Cars?" It was all I could do to keep from slapping him.

Top Selling VHS Tapes

Since Karen's been sharing the Billboard Top 200 with all of us, I thought I'd pass along this tidbit of a link. Check out the best-selling VHS tapes from, updated hourly. At press time, Sweatin' To The Oldies holds the coveted top spot. This post blatantly stolen from Metafilter.

From the AP:

Bill Nye is no longer the Single Guy. Nye, who hosted the educational PBS series "Bill Nye, the Science Guy" during its nine-year run, married his fiance Blair Tindall last Friday, it was announced Tuesday.

The 50-year-old, bow-tied Nye and Tindall, author of "Mozart in the Jungle" and a former concert oboist, exchanged vows at a conference where Nye spoke.

They were married by the Rev. Rick Warren, pastor and author of "The Purpose-Driven Life." Cellist Yo Yo Ma, accompanied by MIT Media Lab Professor Michael Hawley on the piano, performed a wedding march.

Speaking of snoozers...

This is the sound of 45 year old men trying to stay "cool."
